Mike Dunleavy Jr. succeeds Bob Myers as General Manager of Golden State Warriors

June 16 (UPI) — The Golden State Warriors have announced that Mike Dunleavy Jr., a former player for the team, will take over as the new general manager, replacing the long-time decision-maker, Bob Myers.

Dunleavy, aged 42, has been a part of the Warriors’ front office since 2018 and has held various positions, including vice president of basketball operations, assistant general manager, and scout.

In a press release, Warriors co-owner Joe Lacob expressed confidence in Dunleavy, stating, “We believe Mike is the ideal choice to lead our basketball operations department. With his extensive basketball knowledge, which stems from his family background, 15-year NBA career, and experience working under Bob Myers for five seasons, he possesses all the qualities necessary for this role. He is young, energetic, and has built strong relationships across the league, while also being an effective communicator with players and coaches.”

Dunleavy, who was selected as the third overall pick by the Warriors in the 2002 NBA Draft, was later traded to the Indiana Pacers in 2007. He went on to play for several other teams before retiring in 2017, accumulating a career average of 11.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game over 986 NBA appearances.

Bob Myers, who is recognized as one of the league’s top executives and played a crucial role in the Warriors’ four championship wins, announced his resignation as general manager and president earlier this year. Myers, a former sports agent, joined the Warriors in 2011 as assistant general manager and was promoted to the position of general manager in 2012.

During Myers’ tenure, the Warriors made six appearances in the NBA Finals, from 2013 to 2022, solidifying their status as one of the league’s dominant teams. However, their impressive streak came to an end in the 2022-23 season, as they finished with a record of 44-38 and were eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals.
