Michael Gove expresses remorse over ‘atrocious’ Conservative lockdown gathering

Boris Johnson and David Cameron

Lord Bailey, the organizer of the event, had already departed by the time the video was filmed. He has expressed regret for its occurrence.

Michael Gove, speaking to the BBC, maintained that he didn’t believe both individuals should have their honors revoked. However, he suggested that future departing Prime Ministers should not have the authority to create such lists.

“The decision to grant honors was made by Boris Johnson as he stepped down as Prime Minister. Outgoing Prime Ministers currently possess this right,” Gove stated.

He added, “Whether or not they should possess this right is a topic of legitimate public debate. Regardless, at present they do. I must respect due process.”

“We all have our personal opinions about those included on that list. Boris Johnson was responsible for making those decisions. That is the inherent nature of the process,” Gove emphasized.

Insufficient Evidence for Action

In December 2020, when the initial photograph of the gathering emerged, the Metropolitan Police conducted an investigation but concluded that the single image did not provide enough evidence to proceed with action.

The police force has expressed its intention to evaluate whether the new video could potentially impact their investigation, as there have been demands to reopen the inquiry and potentially fine those in attendance.

Gove, when asked about the need for the police to reexamine the gathering, responded, “Well, it is not my place to determine whether the police should investigate, but the evidence is now accessible.”

A spokesperson for the Conservative Party has confirmed that “formal disciplinary action” has been taken against four staff members following the disclosure of the gathering.

Regarding the event, a representative for Mr. Bailey stated, “We have already issued multiple apologies for this event. It underwent an almost year-long investigation by the police. The matter is considered closed.”

Scotland Yard has acknowledged the existence of the footage and is currently reviewing it.
