Michael Cohen Considers Running for Congress

In an intriguing twist of reality during the Donald Trump era, Michael Cohen, the disgruntled former attorney for the ex-president, is contemplating a potential Democratic primary challenge against Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York.

Cohen, who resides on the East Side of Manhattan, expressed to Semafor in a Thursday article that he has “interest” in running for the seat and has received encouragement from numerous individuals.

HuffPost contacted Cohen by phone on Friday, but he declined to provide further details, stating that he is not yet ready to discuss his plans. He assured, “As soon as I’m ready, I’ll definitely give you a call.”

For years, Cohen served as Trump’s personal attorney and fixer, defending him during the 2016 presidential election. Additionally, Cohen made hush money payments to adult actor Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal to conceal their affairs with the reality TV star.

In 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to various federal charges, including violations of campaign finance law for the aforementioned payments. He subsequently served over 13 months in prison, concluding his sentence in November 2021.

Cohen’s legal troubles coincided with a public shift in his opinion of Trump. During his testimony to Congress in 2019, Cohen referred to Trump as a “racist” and a “con man.”

In March of this year, he testified to a Manhattan grand jury concerning the hush money payments made on Trump’s behalf. The grand jury subsequently indicted Trump the following month, accusing him of falsifying business records to conceal those payments.

Some Democrats may be skeptical of Cohen’s sincerity, especially if he runs against Nadler, a veteran liberal who led investigations of Trump while serving as chair of the House Judiciary Committee. Almost a year ago, Nadler decisively defeated fellow Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney in a primary after they were drawn into the same district.

A spokesperson for Nadler has not yet responded to Cohen’s expressed interest in running.

However, a former senior aide of Nadler’s campaign, who requested anonymity, offered a scathing response.

“After a lifetime of debasing himself, Michael Cohen is clearly not satisfied,” stated the former senior aide. “Jerry will easily defeat Cohen without ever needing to shift into second gear.”
