Mexico Prepared to Respond with Actions that Impact American Corn Farmers

Anti-Trump protests take place across Mexico

Mexico’s Strategic Response to Trump: Corn

Mexico stands as one of the largest purchasers of American corn globally. In response to President Trump’s threats against the nation, Mexican Senator Armando Rios Piter plans to introduce a bill this week proposing the shift of corn imports from the United States to Brazil and Argentina.

This move highlights potential concrete action by Mexico towards the U.S.

“I’m going to send a bill for the corn that we are buying in the Midwest and…change to Brazil or Argentina,” stated Rios Piter, 43, during an anti-Trump protest in Mexico City, as reported by CNN’s Leyla Santiago.

With corn serving as a staple in Mexican cuisine, from fine dining establishments to street-side taco stands, any changes in corn supply could have a significant impact on the country’s food industry.

America remains the world’s leading producer and exporter of corn. Current corn shipments from the U.S. to Mexico have dramatically increased since the implementation of NAFTA, with exports amounting to $2.4 billion in 2015 compared to just $391 million in 1995. The potential shift in imports will heavily burden American farmers.

“If Mexico starts buying from Brazil…we’re going to see the corn market affected and repercussions throughout the entire agricultural economy,” explained Darin Newsom, senior analyst at DTN, an agricultural management firm.

Rios Piter’s bill signifies Mexico’s firm stance in response to Trump’s threats. Trump aims for Mexico to bear the costs of constructing a border wall and has threatened tariffs on Mexican imports ranging from 20% to 35%. Additionally, he seeks to renegotiate NAFTA, blaming it for the loss of American manufacturing jobs.

Nevertheless, a nonpartisan congressional research report debunked this claim. Trump’s desired trade deal amendments remain vague, leaving uncertainty about the future negotiations.

Mexican leaders, like Rios Piter, strongly oppose Trump’s aggressive rhetoric. Mexico’s economy minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, has affirmed the country’s readiness to respond immediately to any tariffs imposed by Trump.
