Mexican Cartel Connection: Authorities Report 27 Arrests, 10 in the Harbor Area – Orange County Register

Authorities have announced the arrest of over 25 individuals linked to a criminal operation associated with a Mexican cartel in California’s Harbor Area. This disclosure was made by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and other law-enforcement officials at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Station in San Pedro on October 2nd.

The apprehensions were made as part of a collaborative effort called Operation Safe Harbor, which involved multiple agencies such as the Los Angeles police, the California Highway Patrol, U.S. Homeland Security, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Eddy Wang, a special agent with Homeland Security, stated, “These gang members continue to wreak havoc by flooding their communities with dangerous and illicit narcotics, including fentanyl.”

The operation resulted in the confiscation of 30 firearms, including ghost guns, as well as the seizure of more than 72,000 fentanyl pills, 1.7 pounds of fentanyl powder, 143 pounds of methamphetamine, various other drugs, and over $44,000, according to Bonta.

Los Angeles Councilman Tim McOsker expressed gratitude for the joint efforts and emphasized the impact of illegal guns and drugs on families, saying, “We are all in support of this effort, these joint activities. We are so grateful to LAPD and its partners who have taken these guns off the street.”

The operation, initiated in June, concluded on September 28th after authorities executed seven search warrants in the Harbor Area. This led to 10 arrests and the recovery of 14 firearms, including two ghost guns and one short-barreled rifle, as well as two stolen vehicles and approximately $4,000 in cash.

During the investigation, branches of the criminal enterprise were uncovered, which led to additional arrests in Tulare and Kern counties. The official name of the criminal organization has not been disclosed.

Attorney General Bonta stated, “Tonight, Los Angeles families can live and sleep with greater peace of mind as a result of this investigation.”

The suspects are currently under review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for potential felony charges related to transportation and possession of a controlled substance for sale, conspiracy to commit crime, and felon in possession of firearms.

This represents the third major gang bust in the Harbor Area this year, following previous operations in February and May that resulted in the arrest of nearly 30 suspects.
