General Motors Claims Unprecedented Layoff Packages Severely Impact Workers, Fuelling an Indefinite Chain Hunger Strike

Mumbai: In an effort to resolve the deadlock with workers at its now-closed India factory near Pune, General Motors claims to have made every possible attempt, including offering compensation at seven times the statutory requirement. Despite this, over 1,000 sacked workers have embarked on an indefinite chain hunger strike.

The former workers who are protesting unemployment and their non-absorption by Hyundai Motor India, the prospective buyer of the Talegaon facility, have taken to the streets. A spokesperson for GM stated that the company is eager to finalize the agreement with Hyundai Motor India.

“All employees who were previously associated with General Motors at the Talegaon plant have been legally separated from GM. We offered them a separation package that exceeds the statutory requirement by more than seven times. However, the labor union rejected this proposal, even when it was presented through the Bombay High Court. GM made every effort to provide fair compensation to its employees, despite the union’s actions,” the GM spokesperson stated in an email response to ET.

Regarding the commercial agreement with Hyundai, the spokesperson mentioned that GM is excited to sign the final agreement for the sale of the Talegaon Plant. This will enable the buyer to invest in opportunities and contribute to the growth of Maharashtra.

In March of this year, Hyundai Motor India signed a term sheet to potentially acquire the Talegaon facility from the Detroit-based automaker. Following this, the Maharashtra government granted approval for the plant’s closure application.
