Mets demote Mark Vientos due to lack of productivity and position performance

Mark Vientos’ lack of productivity when given the opportunity to play, combined with his fit within the Mets’ organization, resulted in his demotion to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday.

The rookie infielder was sent down to make room for Pete Alonso’s return from the injured list.

Since his recall last month, Vientos has only managed a .178/.225/.244 slash line with one home run and five RBIs in 49 plate appearances.

The Mets have shown a commitment to Daniel Vogelbach as the left-handed designated hitter, and Tommy Pham’s recent performance from the right side has limited Vientos’ opportunities.

Manager Buck Showalter mentioned, “While [Vientos] hasn’t been as productive as we hoped he would be, it was a good opportunity for him. He was going to have to prove himself quickly, as is usually the case in the major leagues. The difficult part for me is trying to develop players while also striving to win games.”

The team was hesitant to give Vientos extensive playing time in the field, which further limited his chances.

According to Showalter, Vientos will continue honing his skills at third and first base while playing for Syracuse.
