Metal detectorist discovers posy ring buried for 460 years, allegedly concealed by the Sheriff of Nottingham

An ancient gold ring believed to have been hidden by the Sheriff of Nottingham centuries ago has been discovered by a metal detectorist. The ring, which dates back to around 1560 and weighs 15g, was found by Andy Taylor on farmland in Rushcliff, not far from Sherwood Forest. The ring bears the mysterious inscription ‘I Meane Ryght’ and is thought to have been a part of a treasure hoard hidden by the Sheriff or his family. Taylor’s find came just minutes before his friend, Graham Harrison, found a signet ring believed to have belonged to a former Sheriff of Nottingham. The Jenison family, who served as High Sheriffs of Nottingham, were known to have amassed great wealth from valuables left in their care during the Civil War, some of which were never claimed. The ring, known as a ‘posy’ ring, was a popular love token in the 16th century and carried secret messages between the giver and the recipient. The exact meaning of the inscription may never be known. Taylor believes that his ring and Harrison’s signet ring, as well as some discovered coins from the same area, all belonged to the same person. The rings and coins will be auctioned at Hansons Auctioneers in October, with the posy ring expected to fetch between £2,000 and £3,000. Charles Hanson, the owner of the auction house, suggests that the posy ring may have been lost or buried for safekeeping in the mid-16th century, during the reign of either Edward IV or Queen Elizabeth I. The ring’s weight suggests that its owner was wealthy, and it likely served as a token of love or esteem. Despite the association with the Sheriff of Nottingham, these discoveries give us a glimpse into the history of Nottinghamshire during the turbulent times of the 16th and 17th centuries.
