Meta Unveils Ray-Ban Smart Glasses with Dual Cameras at £299 as Mark Zuckerberg Drives Excitement for the Metaverse

Introducing Meta’s AI-Powered Smart Glasses for Sneaky Snaps

Meta’s new smart glasses may appear like your typical trendy eyewear, but there’s more to them than meets the eye. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice two inconspicuous cameras discreetly embedded in the arms, allowing wearers to capture photos and videos without detection. These cutting-edge glasses, priced at £299, were unveiled at the recent Meta Connect 2023 conference.

What sets these glasses apart is their advanced AI capabilities, which enable them to identify scenes and objects that wearers encounter and even provide real-time language translation. As Mark Zuckerberg explains, “Smart glasses are the ideal form factor for you to let AI assistants see what you’re seeing and hear what you’re hearing.”

The Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, a second-generation model, offer a range of improvements. Upgraded speakers deliver enhanced bass, higher maximum volume, and improved directional audio. The inclusion of a 12MP ultra-wide camera allows for capturing photos and recording videos for up to 60 seconds. To cater to Instagram enthusiasts, photos are taken automatically in portrait orientation.

Respecting privacy concerns, Meta has increased the size of the blinking privacy LED, ensuring that others are aware when the glasses are being used for photography, videography, or livestreaming. Battery life is also commendable, with up to four hours of uninterrupted usage before requiring charging in the accompanying case.

These smart glasses are available in two styles: the iconic Wayfarer design and the new Headliner style, with five color options: Matte Black, Shiny Black, Jeans, Rebel Black, and Caramel.

Understanding the Metaverse

The concept of the “metaverse” encompasses a collection of virtual spaces where individuals can engage in gaming, work, and communication with others situated in different physical locations. Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, envisions the metaverse as the future of the internet, blurring the boundaries between the digital and physical worlds. It offers opportunities to socialize, work, learn, create, and shop in a more meaningful manner. However, Meta acknowledges that building the metaverse requires collective effort and will take several years to fully develop.

To address concerns about weight, Meta has significantly reduced the frame’s weight and improved weight distribution, resulting in lighter and more comfortable glasses. The smart glasses incorporate Meta’s AI technology, which can be activated through the wake phrase “Hey Meta.” For instance, wearers can effortlessly share a photo by simply saying, “Hey Meta, send a photo to [insert name].” Initially, this feature will be available only in the US, but Meta plans to expand its availability and functionality over time.

Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses offer a starting price of £299 ($299) and will be available for purchase starting from October 17. This innovation represents Mark Zuckerberg’s ongoing commitment to advancing the metaverse. Despite challenges faced by Meta, such as a significant drop in stock price and the departure of a key executive, the company remains dedicated to allocating 20% of its costs to its Reality Labs division. While a smaller-than-expected user base was noted for Horizon Worlds, Meta’s primary virtual reality world, in December, the company continues to invest heavily in creating virtual worlds.
