Meta refuses request to suspend Facebook account of Hun Sen, Cambodia’s leader

Meta, the social media giant, has rejected a recommendation by its Oversight Board to suspend the Facebook account of Cambodian leader Hun Sen. The Board had asked Meta to suspend the account, pointing to a video in which Hun Sen threatened violence against opponents. However, Meta stated that suspending the account would not be consistent with its policies and protocols. The company had already removed the video in question and did not see a justification for revoking Hun Sen’s access to the platform. Meta has faced challenges in maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and abusive behavior on its platforms. The decision regarding Hun Sen was based on a protocol developed after the suspension of former US President Donald Trump.
