Mercedes-Benz is in the process of updating the G-Class and adding an electric variant to the lineup. The CEO of Mercedes recently took an electric EQG prototype for a spin, or rather, several spins. He tested the car’s capabilities with some intense off-roading that very few vehicles can handle.
Since the announcement of the electric G-Class, Mercedes has been striving to dispel any doubts about maintaining the vehicle’s rugged nature and off-road capabilities with an electric powertrain. First introduced to the market in the 1970s, the iconic G-Class has never lost its reputation as a highly capable off-roader and remains a must-have for enthusiasts and celebrities alike.
Now, as Mercedes works on a facelift for the G-Class, an electric variant is on the horizon. Mercedes aims to reassure enthusiasts that the legendary G-Class character and abilities will not be compromised by the electric powertrain.
A video emerges of CEO Ola Kallenius taking a prototype for the electric G-Class off-roading up the Schockl mountain in Austria. The vehicle successfully endures the grueling off-road test.
The electric prototype maintains the iconic features of the G-Class and introduces a new driving experience. The electric variant will retain the three lock differentials found in traditional G-Class models. It will be powered by four motors, each mounted on a wheel, allowing it to perform the impressive tank turn with the push of a button.
The electric G-Class will maintain the renowned angular design and rugged appearance, including the door hinges, turn lights, and a rear-mounted spare wheel case. The updated Mercedes-Benz G-Class is expected to debut in 2024 as a 2025 model year, with the EQG scheduled to launch around the same time. Additionally, an AMG variant is also in the plans.
