July 7 (UPI) — Mercedes-Benz, the renowned German automaker, announced on Friday that it will now utilize Tesla’s charging stations in North America to enhance the charging experience for owners of its electric vehicles (EVs).

Ola Kallenius, the board chairman at Mercedes, stated, “To expedite the transition to electric vehicles, we are committed to providing our customers with an elevated EV experience, including fast, convenient, and reliable charging solutions wherever they travel with their Mercedes-Benz vehicles.”

Starting in the coming year, owners of Mercedes-Benz EVs will gain access to over 12,000 Tesla chargers.

Additionally, Mercedes plans to establish its own high-power charging hubs in various locations across North America, with a target of setting up more than 2,500 stations by the end of the decade. In doing so, the company aims to redefine the electric vehicle charging experience in the region.

Andrew Cornelia, the head of Mercedes-Benz’s North American operations, expressed, “With the development of Mercedes-Benz’s new North American high-power charging network, we are prepared to revolutionize the electric vehicle charging experience.”

Mercedes-Benz offers a broad range of electric vehicles, including sedans, wagons, and SUVs. One prominent model is the EQB SUV, which has a base model suggested retail price of $52,750.

Mercedes-Benz joins a growing list of companies that are leveraging Tesla’s extensive charging infrastructure across North America.

In early June, General Motors (GM) and Ford also announced their partnership with Tesla for the charging of their electric vehicles. GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, expressed excitement about the opportunity to establish Tesla’s connector, known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), as the unified standard for North America, thereby promoting mass adoption of electric vehicles.

In another development, starting in 2025, all new Polestar vehicles sold in North America will adopt Tesla’s connector.

NACS, developed by Tesla in 2012, has been utilized for all of the company’s cars. While Tesla opened access to the technology for other manufacturers last year, the availability of Tesla Supercharger stations is limited to a 10-year period.
