Mentally Unstable Individual Escapes Despite Being Bound in Shackles and Handcuffs

The Oregon State Police announced on Thursday that Christopher Pray, a man recently transferred to Oregon’s psychiatric hospital, successfully escaped while securely restrained and drove away in a stolen van. Pray, who was previously charged with attempted murder and various other crimes, was last spotted driving south on Interstate 5. The Oregon State Police described him as a “dangerous escapee.” During the escape, an employee of the Oregon State Hospital was injured, according to spokesperson Amber Shoebridge.

The State Police were notified of the escape on Wednesday night. Authorities revealed that Pray managed to elude law enforcement while being fully restrained with leg shackles, a belly chain, handcuffs, and a restraint connecting all three together. Pray, who was facing charges such as attempted murder, robbery, assault, and illegal possession of a firearm, had been sent to the Oregon State Hospital in Salem after being found unfit to proceed with trial in the Multnomah County Circuit Court.

Shoebridge stated in an email that Pray had an altercation with another patient shortly after being admitted, which required him to be taken away for treatment. Pray took advantage of this situation when he was brought back to the hospital in an unmarked van, gaining control of the vehicle and driving away. No information was provided about the staff member’s injury. Pray, who was wearing a white T-shirt, maroon sweatpants, and black rubber slippers, is considered highly dangerous. The police urged the public to immediately dial 911 to report any sightings of Pray or the white 2016 Dodge Caravan he was driving.
