Memorial Bench & Garden Revealed on Anniversary of Tragic Crash Claiming 6 Lives

On the one-year anniversary of a tragic car crash in the Windsor Hills area, family members of the victims, along with County Supervisor Holly Mitchell and local residents, gathered to commemorate the lives lost. The crash claimed the lives of six individuals, including an infant, a pregnant woman, and her unborn child.

The event, which took place near the intersection of La Brea and Slauson avenues, near Ladera Park, featured the unveiling of the Slauson Six Memorial Bench and Community Garden. The memorial was placed on land generously donated by the owners of the gas station where the crash occurred.

County Supervisor Mitchell expressed her hope that the memorial would serve as a reminder for people to prioritize safety on the road and understand the dire consequences of reckless driving.

“This memorial provides us with a space to honor and remember those we lost. It also gives us a place to reflect and consider not only the six lives that were tragically cut short, but also our individual responsibility to ensure the safety of our communities,” Mitchell stated.

The collision, which occurred on August 4, 2022, was caused by a speeding Mercedes-Benz that ran a red light at the intersection of La Brea and Slauson, exceeding the 35 mph speed limit by nearly 100 mph.

The impact of the crash resulted in a fiery inferno, as the Mercedes-Benz collided with a sedan, pushing it into another vehicle before coming to rest against a gas station sign on the corner. Multiple vehicles were engulfed in flames, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a total of eight vehicles, including the Mercedes-Benz, were involved in the collision. Additionally, eight individuals sustained injuries.

Nicole Lorraine Linton, a traveling nurse from Texas, survived the crash with moderate injuries. She has since been charged with six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Linton was arrested by the CHP on the day of the crash and is currently held in custody without bail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for September 12, where a preliminary hearing will determine if there is sufficient evidence for her to stand trial. Linton’s attorney has indicated that she suffers from mental health issues.

The crash claimed the lives of 23-year-old Asherey Ryan, who was pregnant at the time, her one-year-old son Alonzo Quintero, and her boyfriend Reynold Lester, the father of her unborn child. Another car contained Nathesia Lewis, 43, and her friend Lynette Noble, 38, who also lost their lives in the tragic accident.

Following the crash, community activists gathered at the intersection to create a memorial of candles and flowers, honoring the victims.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable and a resident in the area, spoke out about the historically dangerous nature of the intersection due to speeding vehicles and occasional street takeovers.

About a month after the crash, the Board of Supervisors initiated studies and immediate measures to address the issue of speeding and improve safety at the intersection and other high-risk roads.

“Unfortunately, traffic fatalities have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and dangerous behaviors such as speeding and street takeovers have become more prevalent,” Mitchell wrote in a motion at the time. “We must explore additional solutions to enhance our infrastructure and hold individuals accountable in order to prevent further loss of life.”
