Members of the House Freedom Caucus are Pushing for a Cleanout

The House Freedom Caucus is currently grappling with internal divisions and mistrust, although it hasn’t yet reached the point of requiring a loyalty oath. According to Politico, which cites three Republicans familiar with the discussions, some members of the conservative caucus are advocating for a purge of its ranks. At least two hardliners have proposed to caucus chairman Rep. Scott Perry that members who fail to meet its standards should be expelled. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is reportedly one of the leading candidates for expulsion due to her perceived proximity to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and her willingness to openly criticize the caucus.

Insiders reveal that cliques have formed within the caucus, creating an atmosphere where some members feel unable to express themselves freely during meetings for fear of being reported to McCarthy. As The New Yorker previously observed during a discussion on debt ceiling talks, the caucus is primarily defined by what it opposes: the Republican establishment, the status quo in Washington, and any form of compromise. Rep. Ralph Norman, a caucus member, acknowledges that there have been “differences of opinion” on matters such as the House speaker race and the debt deal, but the group has been unable to achieve the necessary 80% consensus to adopt a unified position on certain issues. While Norman denies any personal motivation to remove Greene from the caucus, he acknowledges that she has been critical of the group for a considerable period of time.

Tensions escalated this week when Greene referred to fellow caucus member Rep. Lauren Boebert as a “little b—-” on the House floor. This came after Boebert launched a separate effort to impeach President Biden. Greene confirmed the accuracy of reports on her remarks, while Boebert criticized the focus on “pettiness” instead of her push for impeachment. Boebert expressed her frustration, stating, “I didn’t leave my four kids and now my grandson to come up here and engage in petty arguments and squabbles.” When asked about the potential expulsion of caucus members, she opted not to disclose her stance.
