Melissa Joan Hart’s Nearly Jeopardized Her Role as ‘Sabrina’ with Maxim Cover

Melissa Joan Hart’s role on “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch” was at risk after her racy photoshoot for Maxim magazine. In a recent episode of the “Pod Meets World” podcast, Hart shared the backstory behind a tearful paparazzi photo from the premiere of “Drive Me Crazy” in 1999, where she explained how she had been crying all evening. She had a challenging day, attending early morning interviews, dealing with a messy movie premiere, and going through a fresh breakup from her boyfriend. To make matters worse, she received news of being fired from “Scary Movie” while heading to the airport after the premiere.

Hart sought distraction at an after-party at Planet Hollywood, but her lawyer delivered shocking news. She was being sued and fired from her show due to a photo shoot for Maxim magazine. The star was instructed not to talk to the press or do anything until the situation was resolved. Hart received a phone call from her mother and producer, expressing their disappointment and confusion about her actions. Hart defended herself, stating that she followed her publicist’s guidance during the Maxim shoot, as being in underwear was expected for such a publication.

While the October 1999 cover of Maxim featured Hart in revealing attire with the tagline “Sabrina, your favorite witch without a stitch,” she never played the character naked, as her contract with Archie Comics prohibited it. Hart clarified that she had no control over what Maxim wrote on the cover and was never completely nude during the shoot. She managed to smooth things over by writing an apology letter to the company.

“Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” centered around a teenage girl discovering her magical powers while living with her gifted aunts. Hart played the lead role for all seven seasons of the ABC series, which aired from 1996 to 2003, consisting of 163 episodes and three made-for-TV films.
