Melissa Barrera and Susan Sarandon’s Controversial Remarks Spark Backlash

Artists Susan Sarandon and Melissa Barrera have faced repercussions for their comments on the Israeli bombardment of Gaza. The consequences include Sarandon being dropped by her talent agency and Barrera being fired from the movie Scream 7. Sarandon, who won an Academy Award, expressed her concerns at a rally in New York, where she talked about people being afraid to be Jewish in this current environment. United Talent Agency (UTA) has confirmed that they no longer represent Sarandon. Barrera, on the other hand, has been active on social media, calling for an end to the violence and making comments about media coverage of the conflict. Spyglass Media Group, the co-producers of Scream 7, stated that they have a “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form” after Barrera’s comments, leading to her firing. Jenna Ortega, Barrera’s co-star in the movie, will also not be returning for the next installment. The decision has received swift backlash from fans, who feel disappointed and frustrated with the situation. Director Christopher Landon also responded to the fan outrage. In October, Ortega, Barrera, and Sarandon were among the Hollywood talent who signed a letter to President Biden calling for a ceasefire. Rania Batrice, a part of the group that spearheaded the letter, believes that the entertainment industry is trying to “punish artists” for voicing their support for the Palestinian cause, and she remains hopeful that people will continue to speak up for humanity despite these challenges.
