Meet John Turscak: The Man Accused of Stabbing Derek Chauvin 22 Times

Man who stabbed Derek Chauvin identified as member of Mexican Mafia gang

A man accused of stabbing Derek Chauvin in federal prison last week has been identified as John Turscak, and he is facing charges of attempted murder, assault to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The 52-year-old allegedly used an “improvised knife” to attack Chauvin in the law library of the Tuscon Federal Correctional Institution on Nov. 26. According to FBI agents, Turscak had been planning the assault for about a month due to Chauvin’s high-profile nature.

Turscak claimed that he chose to attack Chauvin on Black Friday as a symbolic gesture associated with the Black Lives Matter movement and the “Black Hand” symbol often linked to the Mexican Mafia. His criminal past includes a 30-year sentence for involvement in crimes while working as a federal informant in a case that targeted members of the Mexican Mafia. He admitted to joining the gang in 1990 and being involved in authorizing assaults and collecting “taxes” from street gangs and drug dealers in exchange for protection and permission to traffic narcotics. Court documents also revealed that Turscak confessed to a murder in 1990 as well as authorizing another murder in 1998.

Chauvin was hospitalized after the attack but is currently in stable condition. The incident has raised concerns about federal prison security in the aftermath of the attack. Thank you for visiting CBS NEWS.
