Medieval Times Violated Law with Unlawful Anti-Union Campaign in New Jersey, According to Federal Authorities

The National Labor Relations Board issued a complaint on Monday, stating that Medieval Times, the dinner-theater chain, repeatedly violated the law during a union organizing campaign at its New Jersey castle. The complaint alleges that the company illegally fired a union supporter, withheld raises from unionized workers, and attempted to have the union’s TikTok account banned. The CEO of Medieval Times, Perico Montaner, is directly implicated in the charges. The complaint states that Montaner threatened non-union workers at other castles with the denial of raises because of the unionization efforts in New Jersey. Additionally, Montaner reached out to TikTok to shut down the union’s account, claiming trademark infringement. The labor board’s general counsel agrees with the union’s argument that banning the account violated employees’ rights.

Medieval Times has not yet responded to the charges. A hearing has been scheduled for November 7th, where both parties will present witnesses for testimony. The complaint seeks reinstatement and backpay for the fired worker, Chris Lucas, as well as a letter of apology from Montaner. The general counsel also requests a cease and desist order against the alleged unfair labor practices.

Workers at the Medieval Times castle in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, were the first to unionize last year, followed by their counterparts at the company’s Southern California castle. The unionization efforts aim to improve wages and safety conditions at the castles, as workers in both states have reported hazardous working conditions. The California castle has been on strike since February, accusing the company of illegal retaliation.

This is not the first time Medieval Times has faced accusations of illegal union-busting. In May, the general counsel filed a complaint against the company in California, alleging management’s attempt to withdraw workers’ support for the union.

Overall, the labor board’s complaint highlights the alleged unlawful actions taken by Medieval Times to impede the union organizing campaign and showcases the ongoing struggle between the company and its workers seeking improved working conditions.
