Media Applauds as Journalist Is Assaulted and Defamed

Portland, Oregon, once a thriving city, has gained international notoriety as a haven of ruin. In the summer of 2020, the city witnessed over 100 consecutive nights of riots. Every federal and state building fell victim to attacks, forcing businesses to close or board up. Downtown became an apocalyptic wasteland, adorned with graffiti and plagued by homeless individuals. Intrigued by the situation, I decided to investigate firsthand. This was a time when Joe Biden dismissed the group responsible, Antifa, as “an idea” rather than a tangible threat. However, during my two nights undercover with the radical group, I came face to face with their very real actions. I witnessed their intimidation tactics towards locals and watched as they attacked the city’s only ICE facility, as well as the remaining forces of law and order.

Portland gained significant attention due to the efforts of a courageous local journalist named Andy Ngo, who happens to be the son of Vietnamese immigrants. Ngo, witnessing the deterioration of the city he called home, took it upon himself to document its descent. He captured Antifa’s violent activities on video and shared them online. Additionally, he diligently gathered mugshots of Antifa rioters who were actually arrested, exposing their identities. Many of these individuals resembled characters from a horror movie. Despite shining a light on the truth, Ngo became a target of Antifa. I witnessed firsthand the prevalent graffiti in Portland, which often included the menacing phrase “Kill Andy Ngo.” Antifa made two violent attempts on his life, one resulting in Ngo being hospitalized with a brain hemorrhage and enduring cognitive impairment thereafter. They even went as far as targeting Ngo’s mother’s home, approaching the front door with masks bearing Ngo’s likeness.

Surprisingly, the media failed to protect their own. Organizations like PEN and the ADL, known for defending journalists and writers, remained silent. Perhaps they were influenced by Antifa’s smear campaign against Ngo, who they portrayed as a “far-right” extremist providing “kill lists” to neo-Nazis. It’s a twisted tactic to tarnish opponents, and Antifa was determined to silence Ngo because he reported on their actions accurately.

In 2021, Antifa nearly succeeded in their second attempt on Ngo’s life. They found him while he worked undercover, assaulting him and chasing him into a local hotel lobby. It’s appalling that despite these documented assaults, the authorities did nothing to hold the assailants accountable. Ngo, not one to give up, sought justice through a civil case funded by generous supporters. However, his attempts to bring Rose City Antifa to trial were denied, with the judge only allowing two of Ngo’s attackers to face trial. Ngo was left to take matters into his own hands through a crowdfunding campaign. The trial, unfortunately, was a disgrace. Antifa had a well-funded legal team and enjoyed a near media blackout, thanks to the actions of the judge. They even presented an “expert witness” who baselessly claimed that Ngo was responsible for a “neo-Nazi kill list.” On the other hand, Ngo’s team presented damning evidence against the Antifa activists.

The local jury, living in a city conditioned by fear, proved hesitant to convict the Antifa thugs. Antifa, emboldened, roamed the courthouse halls, hoping to intimidate Ngo and others. Shockingly, during the lawyer’s closing statement, she proudly declared that she would now wear an “I am Antifa” shirt and made it known that she would remember the jurors’ faces. The jury ultimately returned a “no fault” verdict, letting the Antifa activists off without consequences. The only journalist covering the trial, a colleague of Ngo’s, had her car broken into and robbed. Meanwhile, biased media outlets like the Daily Beast celebrated the activists’ exoneration with headlines like “Activists cleared after right-wing troll Andy Ngo accuses them of assault.” This deliberate defamation and the dismissal of violent thugs as mere “activists” exemplifies just how rotten the situation has become.

Portland is no longer just a lawless city; it’s a place where true justice cannot prevail. Even when private citizens like Ngo step up to fill the void left by authorities, their efforts are thwarted. I hold onto hope that Ngo will appeal the verdict and that a widespread crowdfunding campaign can aid his cause. He has not given up thus far, and I hope he continues to fight. In the meantime, I long for the day when those responsible for allowing this debacle to unfold in an American city hang their heads in shame.
