A brush fire ignited on Monday in Mead Valley and burned approximately seven acres before being contained with the assistance of Cal Fire aircraft.
The fire, named the “Rocky Fire,” was first reported at 2:20 p.m. south of Rocky Summit Drive, near Cajalco Road, as confirmed by the Riverside County Fire Department.
Upon arrival, multiple engine and hand crews from the county and surrounding agencies were dispatched to the location. They encountered flames moving eastward at a moderate speed through light vegetation in a field.
Cal Fire deployed two air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter, making multiple runs to suppress the fire.
The crews were on the verge of establishing containment lines when gusty conditions caused the flames to jump over a road, resulting in the expansion of the fire to four acres. This area branched out from the main fire.
Additionally, a smaller spot fire measuring half an acre started on the eastern side of the brush fire but was swiftly extinguished.
No residential or structural damage was reported in the incident.
The forward spread of the fire was halted completely by 3:50 p.m., and the overall containment level was declared to be 50%.
During the operation, one firefighter fell ill while laying hose lines, exhibiting symptoms of heat exhaustion. The firefighter was then transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to reports from the scene.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
