McDonald’s Japan Raises Prices in City Centers Due to Rising Costs

TOKYO – The Japanese operator of McDonald’s restaurants announced on Monday its plans to increase prices at 184 city center branches, which accounts for around 6 percent of its total 3,000 stores. This decision comes as a response to higher rents and labor costs.

Prior to this, only 40 stores located in city centers and special locations such as airports and motorway service stations were subject to “city center pricing”.

McDonald’s Holdings Company Japan stated that the new pricing will take effect on July 19.

Many businesses have started passing on the increased costs of imported energy and raw materials to consumers.

As Japan’s largest fast-food chain, McDonald’s has already implemented three price increases across all its outlets since March 2022, including the most recent one in January.

McDonald’s mentioned that the latest round of price hikes will vary from 10 to 90 yen per item or set. The delivery price of a Big Mac, for example, will rise from 540 yen to 590 yen, according to the press release.

The yen has experienced a decline in value, currently standing at 141.81 to the dollar compared to around 133 at the beginning of the year.
