John Duarte called the event a “lapse in judgment” and expressed concerns about its potential impact on delicate matters within the conference. Another GOP member described it as “the height of idiocy.” As a result of the backlash, one contender, Kevin Hern, stated that he had no intention of participating in the forum, and Jim Jordan only wanted to participate if it took place after the GOP’s closed-door conference. Steve Scalise also pulled out after seeing the reactions of the other two contenders.
