MANILA, Philippines — The Mayon volcano remains in a state of “high level of unrest” even a month after being placed under Alert Level 3.

In a bulletin released on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated that there is still a possibility of a hazardous eruption occurring within weeks or days, and advised that the six-kilometer danger zone should remain evacuated.

“Alert level 3 is being maintained over Mayon, indicating its current high level of unrest and the potential for a hazardous eruption within weeks or days. Therefore, it is recommended to keep the six-kilometer danger zone uninhabited due to the risks of pyroclastic density currents, lava flows, rockfalls, and other volcanic hazards,” the bulletin read.

The eruption of lava from Mayon volcano has continued during the latest 24-hour observation period, according to Phivolcs.

“The lava flows have extended to approximately 2,800 meters and 1,300 meters along the Mi-si and Bonga gullies,” it noted.

During the monitoring cycle from 5 a.m., July 7, to 5:00 a.m. July 8, eight volcanic earthquakes were recorded, which is lower than the 79 earthquakes reported on Friday. However, the number of rockfall events increased from 216 to 303.

Phivolcs also reported one lava collapse pyroclastic density current that produced a 300-meter ash cloud. The volcano’s sulfur dioxide degassing has persisted, with an average of 792 metric tons recorded during the last 24-hour observation period.

The alert level of Mayon Volcano was raised from 2 to 3 on June 8 due to increased seismic activities. The volcano began spewing lava on June 11.

Phivolcs Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol stated on June 13 that Mayon’s unrest could last for a few months, citing similarities between its current volcanic activities and its restiveness in 2018 and 2014.
