Maui’s Post-Fire Destinations: Must-Visit Spots and Places to Steer Clear Of

  • A devastating series of wildfires in Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii resulted in the destruction of homes and the tragic loss of 115 lives.
  • Among the impacted areas, West Maui was hit the hardest and, as a result, it is currently closed to tourists.
  • Nevertheless, authorities are urging people to explore other parts of Maui as a means to stimulate the local economy.

Last month, catastrophic wildfires wreaked havoc on Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii, resulting in the devastating loss of homes and the displacement of tens of thousands of residents and tourists. Verified reports from The New York Times confirm that 115 lives were tragically lost as of August 29.

Despite the destruction, Maui heavily relies on its tourism industry, with 2.7 million visitors spending $5.82 billion on the island in 2022, according to a report by Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

In response to the wildfires, an emergency proclamation was issued by Hawaii Gov. Josh Green on August 19, strongly advising against nonessential travel to West Maui. However, during a press conference with President Joe Biden on August 21, Gov. Green encouraged visitors to explore other parts of Maui in order to “support our local economy and aid in the recovery process,” as stated in a press release from the Office of the Governor.

Here are eight areas of Maui that remain accessible to tourists, along with the currently restricted areas.
