Maui Weddings Remain Unaffected by Wildfires

In a resourceful move, she managed to secure three Starlink kits from SpaceX through a contact in San Francisco. These kits are crucial for providing internet access to the western side of the island. Despite her busy schedule, she has also resumed work and will be travelling to Lanai to photograph a wedding at the Four Seasons Resort. Additionally, she is scheduled to capture moments at another wedding in Oahu in early September.

When asked about her decision to proceed with the shoots, Ms. Cummins explained, “I took a moment to reflect, and I made the choice from a grounded perspective. My only concern was that I wanted to continue assisting those who have lost everything. However, moving forward and capturing positive emotions is a way for me to be of service.”

For her January destination wedding at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, 37-year-old program director Kelsey Kiyota reached out to her vendors in Maui. To her satisfaction, they all advised her to stick to her original plans.

Kiyota and her fiancé, Elliott Lin, 34, who works as a project manager, reside in Erie, Colo., and have experienced the devastation caused by wildfires before. Kiyota mentioned, “We want to show respect, so we’ve been relying on our vendors to guide us. And it turns out, they all want to celebrate love.”

Ms. Russo is also pushing forward with her wedding on Sept. 30, and even vendors whom she didn’t hire are stepping in to ensure the ceremony takes place. Sylvia Hamilton-Kerr, the owner of Haiku Mill in Haiku, Hawaii, generously offered the use of her historic venue to the couple. Matias Ezcurra volunteered to photograph the wedding at no cost. As for Ms. Russo’s bridal look, her makeup artist, Crystal Yokoyama, is providing her services for free. Additionally, a close friend surprised Ms. Russo by purchasing the same wedding gown for her.

Reflecting on their experience, Ms. Russo expressed, “We have truly embodied our vows while navigating this tragedy. We mourn the loss of our home and the expectations we had for our wedding, but we must hold onto hope. I firmly believe that amidst unbearable pain, it is possible to find joy and gratitude.”
