Matty Lee and Noah Williams, an English partnership, secure gold in synchronised diving at the Commonwealth Games

Matty Lee and Noah Williams, despite suffering from cramp, clinched the gold medal in the men’s 10-metre synchronised platform event on Friday, outperforming Canada and Australia who secured second and third place respectively.

This victory adds on to Williams’ success in the 10-metre synchronised event, as he had previously won a silver medal with Matthew Dixon on the Gold Coast in 2018. Likewise, Lee is no stranger to triumph in this discipline, having won gold in the Tokyo Olympics partnering with Tom Daley. However, he expressed his delight in adding a Commonwealth medal to his collection.

Reflecting on their achievement, Lee said, “I’m feeling immensely accomplished. Securing my first-ever Commonwealth medal is something I’ve always aspired to achieve. I’ve had several achievements in my career, but excelling at the Commonwealth Games has always been one of my top goals. Noah and I are overjoyed to emerge as winners today.”

Meanwhile, Jack Laugher, alongside Anthony Harding, triumphed in the men’s synchronised three-metre springboard event, securing his second gold medal of the Commonwealth Games. In their relatively new partnership, they dominated the event on Friday at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre with an impressive score of 438.33 points, winning by a significant margin of 61.56 points.

For the 22-year-old Harding, this was his first medal on his Commonwealth debut, and he expressed his delight in finally showcasing his abilities. He said, “I’m absolutely thrilled. I performed quite well, although I could have done even better. Jack might be a little disappointed, but I’ve worked tirelessly for this moment. I’ve waited for many years, watching Jack perform at three other Commonwealth Games and three Olympics. So, it’s been a long wait for me to reach this stage, and he has been a tremendous support.”

Laugher, with his experience in the discipline, having already won gold at the Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018 with Chris Mears, added to his winning streak by securing gold in Thursday’s one-metre individual springboard event. He now has a chance to add a third gold in today’s three-metre individual springboard. Reflecting on his consecutive victories, Laugher said, “Two golds in two days, it’s been fantastic. I had some difficulty sleeping last night and felt a bit under the weather this morning…”
