Matty Healy criticizes Malaysian officials following ban for kissing male bandmate

The 1975’s frontman, Matty Healy, has responded to the ban imposed by Malaysian authorities on the band’s return to the country. The ban was a result of Healy kissing his male bandmate on stage during their concert. Healy took to Instagram to mock the ruling, sharing photos of himself and bassist Ross MacDonald with a caption that humorously suggested they try not making out for the next two decades. He followed this with an image of a hat placed on a map of Malaysia.

A source close to the band revealed that Matty Healy has always been a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and that the band wanted to show support for their LGBTQ+ fans.

During their performance at the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur, Healy criticized Malaysia’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws. He acknowledged that he made a mistake by not researching before booking the show and expressed his frustration at being told who to have sex with while in the country. He also apologized if his remarks offended anyone, but stood firm in his criticism of the government.

Following this, the Ministry of Communications and Digital in Malaysia canceled the three-day Good Vibes Festival due to Healy’s controversial conduct and remarks.

Healy considered canceling the show altogether but ultimately decided not to punish his fans for the government’s actions. He expressed his support for the LGBTQ+ community among his fans and stated that he didn’t want to let them down.

Healy concluded his performance by stating that if the government wanted to invite him to perform in the country, they can “fuck off.” He then kissed MacDonald on stage before walking off, announcing the band’s ban from Kuala Lumpur.

In Malaysia, same-sex activity is illegal, carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment with whipping. In response to the ban, The 1975 canceled their shows in Taiwan and Indonesia, citing the impossibility of proceeding with the scheduled dates. The band expressed regret over the cancellations, as they had been eagerly looking forward to performing for their fans in Jakarta and Taipei.
