Matthew Broderick Reveals Frequent Mugging Incidents in New York City
Matthew Broderick, best known for his role in “Wargames,” recently opened up about the multiple attacks he endured while growing up in New York City. The actor shared his experiences of being targeted in various neighborhoods, including Washington Square North and Times Square.
In an episode of iHeart’s “Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi” podcast, Broderick recalled, “I got mugged often! I’ve been mugged all through the Village, Times Square, Upper West Side.” He attributed his vulnerability to his young age, stating, “I’m talking like 12 [years old] — that’s when it happened a lot. It was mostly other boys just being bullies and getting lunch money … But sometimes it was somewhat scary.”
Broderick went on to share a particularly harrowing incident that occurred while he and a friend were skateboarding in Central Park. He described a “massive gang” that suddenly appeared and proceeded to steal their belongings. “I got whacked in the head with some sort of stick!” he revealed. “It was not a joke. Thank God, we all survived it.”
The actor also mentioned other intimidating encounters, including threats of having his head slammed through glass and being accosted on New York trains. Reflecting on these incidents, Broderick recalled the feeling of waiting anxiously for the train to emerge from the tunnel.
Despite notifying his parents about the frequent muggings, Broderick explained that back then, parents were not as vigilant as they are today. He shared that a police officer would visit his school and provide lessons on how to handle such situations, advising students to carry some money and surrender it quickly to avoid prolonging the ordeal.
Matthew Broderick, who has been married to actress Sarah Jessica Parker for 26 years, is known for his iconic role in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” The couple has three children together.
