Matt Doherty expresses dissatisfaction with Wolves’ pre-season preparations: “I believe there are imperfections behind the scenes.”

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of new signings earlier this week, as the club is currently restricted by financial fair play regulations.

Matt Doherty, who returned to Wolves last week after a decade at Molineux, voiced his hope that the club can make additional signings before the September 1 deadline.

In an interview with Viaplay Sports following Wolves’ 1-1 draw against Celtic at the Aviva Stadium, Doherty commented on the team’s internal struggles, stating, “I don’t think things are perfect behind the scenes at all. But as players, there is nothing we can do about it except go out onto the pitch and execute the manager’s instructions.”

Doherty, who recently returned to Wolves after brief stints at Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid, admitted to initial reservations about coming back to the club. However, after discussions with Lopetegui, he signed a three-year contract.

When asked about his decision, Doherty stated, “No, not an easy decision. You don’t want to kind of ruin what you might have done before. But then when I spoke to the right people, the manager really wanted me to come which obviously helps. You want a manager who believes in you and wants you to play for him.”

Reflecting on Wolves’ recent friendly match against Celtic, Doherty expressed his delight at playing in front of a crowd of almost 30,000 at the national stadium and emphasized the importance of upcoming games, including an international match against the Netherlands on September 10.

Looking ahead to the Premier League season, which kicks off with an away match against Manchester United on August 14, Doherty expressed confidence in his team’s ability to exceed expectations. He stated, “Every team’s initial goal in the Premier League is obviously to stay up. But we are ambitious players, we want to achieve things that maybe people didn’t think we could. We’ll be going into the season full of confidence and I think we’ll do well.”
