Matt Damon Promises Spouse a Work Hiatus, Unless Chris Nolan Extends an Offer

  • Matt Damon made a promise to his wife that he would take a break from acting unless he received a call from Chris Nolan.
  • During an interview with his “Oppenheimer” castmates in Entertainment Weekly, the actor recalled the promise he had made.
  • Damon revealed that he had the foresight to make this request, even though he had no knowledge of Nolan working on a new film.

Matt Damon pledged to take a break from his acting career, as discussed in couples therapy, unless he received a call from acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan.

During an Entertainment Weekly interview with his “Oppenheimer” co-stars, including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and the director himself, Damon shared that he had the foresight to inform his wife that the only exception to his hiatus would be the opportunity to work with Nolan again.

Damon revealed, “I had been in ‘Interstellar,’ and then Chris put me on ice for a couple of movies, so I wasn’t in the rotation. But I actually negotiated in couples therapy — this is a true story — the one caveat to my taking time off was if Chris Nolan called.”

The 52-year-old actor also mentioned that he made this request without any knowledge of Nolan’s current projects, as the director is known for keeping his plans secret. “Like with Cillian, he just calls you out of the blue. And so, it was a moment in my household,” Damon shared.

Damon ultimately secured a role in Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” as General Leslie Groves, the military officer overseeing the Manhattan Project, a historical drama centered around physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, often referred to as the father of the atomic bomb. Both Murphy and Damon had previously collaborated with Nolan in his earlier films.

The highly anticipated film “Oppenheimer” is set to premiere in cinemas on Friday, July 21.
