A devastating fire broke out in Bacolod City, displacing 201 individuals or 63 families in the densely populated area of Purok Tangkong, Barangay 7. The incident resulted in the destruction of 38 houses and damage to two others.
The fire started from Frederico Lumayno’s house when he accidentally left his food cooking on a butane stove unattended. Lumayno admitted that he forgot about the food as he left to attend a wake. The fire was reported to the Bureau of Fire Protection at 9:48 p.m., approximately two hours after Lumayno started cooking at around 7 p.m.
Due to the narrow pathway in the squatter area, firefighters faced difficulty in extinguishing the rapidly spreading fire. The blaze was eventually put out at 11:15 p.m. that same night.
Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez visited the scene of the fire and assured the victims of government assistance. The affected individuals were temporarily sheltered at the Villamonte gym and provided with food, folding beds, sleeping and hygiene kits, modular tents, and water.
