Authorities on the Greek island of Rhodes have ordered the evacuation of 19,000 tourists and residents due to widespread wildfires. Described as the country’s largest ever preventive fire evacuation, this measure was taken to ensure the safety of people in danger zones. The fires, which burned in 58 different locations on the island, resulted in no casualties but caused respiratory issues for nine individuals who were treated at the hospital. More than 260 firefighters, along with aircraft and volunteers, were involved in the emergency response efforts. International assistance, including aircraft from France and Turkey, as well as firefighters and engines from Slovakia, was also provided. These fires occur during a heat wave affecting southern Europe, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Other fires have recently occurred in Greece, including in Athens where the Acropolis was temporarily closed to tourists. The airlines TUI and Jet2 have canceled flights to Rhodes in response to the ongoing wildfires. The deputy mayor of Rhodes stressed the strain on local authorities in accommodating the large number of evacuees, highlighting the need for essential supplies such as mattresses and beds. Some tourists shared their experiences on social media, describing how they had to flee their resorts and take refuge on boats or in makeshift accommodations. Last year, a U.N. report warned that the risk of uncontrollable wildfires is increasing due to rising greenhouse gas emissions. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has returned to Greece to manage the situation, while other countries like Cyprus and Israel have pledged assistance. Greek authorities are urging caution and vigilance, as the extreme climatic conditions can easily escalate fires into major disasters.
