Maryland Elementary School Reinstates Use of Masks for Kids Due to Increase in COVID-19 Cases Among Third-Graders

A Maryland elementary school has faced backlash for reimposing mask mandates despite a low number of COVID cases among students. Principal Rebecca Irwin Kennedy sent a letter to parents, stating that three or more individuals had tested positive for the virus in the last ten days. She urged students to wear N95 masks for safety, even though studies have shown that these masks may expose users to toxic chemicals. Kennedy declared that the masks would only be optional after 10 days. The decision has sparked anger and concerns over a return to COVID restrictions. The letter was sent to parents of students in one class at Rosemary Hills Elementary School, with the purpose of maintaining in-person teaching. Additional N95 masks were distributed to students and staff, and at-home rapid test kits are being sent out along with CDC guidelines on testing frequency. The school, as well as the Montgomery County Public Schools system and Kennedy’s assistant principal, has not yet commented on the matter. While rates of COVID hospitalizations have seen a slight increase, they are still at historic lows. Experts attribute the rise to the natural decline of immunity, which occurs approximately six months after the previous wave of infections. Despite these circumstances, Kennedy’s decision contradicts experts who believe that the virus will remain an ongoing part of everyday life, much like the common cold. Estimates suggest that around 96% of Americans have developed immunity to COVID through prior infections and vaccination. This high level of immunity should better equip the nation to handle future waves of infection. The CDC has noted record low death rates as officials downplay the recent surge. New Yorkers have been advised to wear masks for Labor Day celebrations due to fears of the virus. Concerns over mask mandates have been fueled by the inconsistent messaging from Dr. Anthony Fauci, who initially encouraged the use of masks but later claimed that the data supporting their effectiveness is weaker.
