Martha’s Vineyard Home Shared with Late Husband Listed by Diane Sawyer

Veteran anchor Diane Sawyer is bidding farewell to her long-held Martha’s Vineyard estate, which she acquired in 1995 alongside her late husband, renowned film director Mike Nichols. The estate, fondly known as Chip Chop, holds a special place in Sawyer’s heart. However, she has decided to let go of the property as the dynamics of summer have changed for her family, and they now have less leisure time for extended visits to the island.

Over the years, Sawyer’s home has witnessed the joyful chaos of her five grandchildren, who have explored its halls and learned to swim in the warm waters nearby. The house holds precious memories, such as the cozy warmth and golden light emanating from its two enormous fireplaces during Thanksgiving gatherings. Sawyer considers herself fortunate to have experienced special moments with her loved ones in this enchanting place.

Sadly, Nichols passed away in 2014 due to a heart attack at their Manhattan apartment. Known for directing iconic movies like “The Graduate” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, Nichols also had a deep affinity for Martha’s Vineyard. Sawyer shared that he fell in love with the island during the 1960s when he visited actress Katharine Cornell at her breathtaking home. He was captivated by the magnificent woodwork of the great room and the inviting path leading to the beach. This place had a profound impact on Nichols’ imagination, and he cherished it dearly.

Chip Chop, spanning an impressive 20 acres, was originally built for the legendary actress Cornell in the 1940s. She hosted esteemed guests such as Noel Coward, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Laurence Olivier in the opulent estate. Sawyer and Nichols meticulously restored the house over the years, using it as a venue for grand gatherings with their family and friends. The property offers breathtaking water views and features multiple homes, including the main 3-bedroom house, a 2-bedroom caretaker’s cottage, and two modern beach cottages known as “The Shacks.”

The estate provides a generous amount of waterfront space, including approximately half a mile of sandy beach along the Vineyard Sound. It boasts two private stretches of beach: 2,000 feet along the Vineyard Sound and 1,600 feet on Lake Tashmoo. The dwellings offer balconies with panoramic ocean views, and the pool area provides a serene atmosphere overlooking the ocean. Additionally, the property includes a private tennis court for outdoor recreation.

Mark Jenkins of Wallace and Co. Sotheby’s International Realty is handling the listing of the Chip Chop estate. Diane Sawyer, a renowned news anchor who has graced shows like ABC World News Tonight, Good Morning America, and ABC News 20/20, has decided to pass on this beautiful property, filled with cherished memories, to new owners who will appreciate its magic and create their own enchanting experiences.
