Marquise “Hollywood” Brown’s explanation for his reckless speeding at 126 mph didn’t quite hold up to scrutiny when he was arrested for criminal speeding charges last year. Recently released body cam footage obtained by TMZ shows the Cardinals wide receiver claiming he was rushing to football practice while being handcuffed on the side of the road. However, this excuse did nothing to appease the enraged officer who confronted Brown. Driving at nearly double the speed limit in a 65 mph zone, Brown’s actions were clearly irresponsible and dangerous.
In the footage, Brown can be heard apologizing, saying, “Sorry, I was on my way to football practice, sir.” However, the officer’s furious response was far from sympathetic as he yelled at the 26-year-old to exit his white Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, demanding to know why he was driving so recklessly. The officer stated, “You should know better than to go that fast,” to which Brown replied, “Yes, sir. I’m new here, sir.”
Eventually, Brown reached a plea deal with prosecutors in February. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of excessive speed, putting an end to the case. In March, a judge waived the initial $473 fine and provided credit for time served. Despite this outcome, Brown expressed his disappointment about the arrest, stating that he is not typically someone who gets into trouble. He vowed to move past the incident and ensure he always acts in the right manner moving forward, recognizing the influence he has on the younger generation looking up to him.
When pressed for further context on why he was driving at such a dangerously high speed, Brown refrained from elaborating, only stating that he was not running late for practice. He emphasized the importance of setting a positive example for the many kids who admire him.
After being acquired by the Arizona Cardinals in a draft-day trade with the Baltimore Ravens in April 2022, Brown had a productive first year with the team, recording 709 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Previously, he was selected by the Ravens as the 25th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
