Market for Gold Rush-era brothel and Disney’s ‘Ride a Wild Pony’ film set emerges

A charming and historic Victorian tavern and house with a fascinating past as both a Gold Rush-era brothel and a Disney film set is now available for purchase. Situated at 41-43 Conness St, Chiltern, Australia, a quaint town in northeastern Australia, this property known as The Ironbark Bistro, Tavern & Residence is a true gem. Stephen and Carmen Ottaway, the proud owners, acquired the hotel, built around 1869, and the adjacent house, built in 1891, almost eight years ago with dreams of running a joint venture.

When the Ottaways first laid eyes on the property, they were disheartened by its dilapidated condition. The house had been used for storage for approximately thirty years, and the tavern had been closed since a brief reopening in the 1990s. “There were two large supports holding up the second floor of the house,” Mr. Ottaway remarked. Despite its sorry state, the property displayed the potential of a stunning historical landmark with immense character.

Determined to restore this beauty, the Ottaways underwent a major renovation project. They restumped the two-bedroom house, replaced the internal frame, floors, walls, plumbing, and wiring. An exquisite mantle was added above the original fireplace in the living area, and a luxurious spa was installed in the bathroom. “We had the original red bricks expertly cleaned, polished, and protected,” Mr. Ottaway shared. The layout of the hotel was largely preserved, aside from the removal of an internal wall that connected two kitchens, making way for a more spacious commercial kitchen equipped with stainless-steel walls, a pizza oven, and a wok burner. The bistro still retains its original polished floorboards and skylights. A separate cocktail bar, open beer garden with a cozy pot belly fire, annexed cool room, and an 80-panel solar system complete the features of this remarkable establishment.

During their research, Mr. Ottaway uncovered the fascinating history of the house, discovering that it once served as a pool hall and brothel during the Gold Rush when Chiltern’s population reached a staggering 20,000 people. “Apparently, there was a hidden escape route beneath the house, leading from the adjoining pub, ensuring gentlemen could discreetly access the brothel,” Mr. Ottaway revealed. However, the tunnel has since been filled in and concealed.

In more recent times, the hotel gained fame for its appearance in the 1975 Disney film ‘Ride a Wild Pony’, starring renowned actors Michael Craig from various popular television series and John Meillon from the iconic ‘Crocodile Dundee’ films. In the movie, the hotel played the role of Barambogie Crystal Palace Cinema.

Presently, the tavern is known for its vibrant music scene, hosting monthly jam sessions and live band performances in the enchanting beer garden and sheds. One of the sheds features a captivating mural showcasing local musicians. “I believe I have the best job in town,” Mr. Ottaway exclaimed. “Standing behind the bar while live music fills the air, witnessing everyone join in singing and dancing, truly reminiscent of the lively Irish pubs depicted in movies.”

Although the Ottaways have developed a deep fondness for Chiltern and cherish their business, they have made the difficult decision to sell the property in order to be closer to their family, especially after the birth of their granddaughter. Aaron Jay Camilleri of @realty Sunshine affirms that the fortunate buyer of this property will acquire a slice of Australian history. “The amount of stories and historical significance within this place is simply astounding,” Mr. Camilleri stated. Chiltern’s exceptionally well-preserved 19th-century streetscape, including Conness St, has earned the reputation as “the most photographed street in Victoria” and has served as the backdrop for various films.

The Ironbark Bistro, Tavern & Residence is currently on the market with a price guide ranging from $850,000 to $900,000.
