Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Fear’ Sex Scene Falls Short of Expectations

Reese Witherspoon recently opened up about her less-than-pleasant experience filming a sex scene with Mark Wahlberg for the 1996 film “Fear.” Speaking in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the now 47-year-old actress revealed that she had no control over the scene, which involved her portraying an orgasm. Witherspoon stated that it was not explicitly written in the script, and she had even requested a stunt double. However, the director, James Foley, spontaneously introduced the idea on set. The actress described the experience as “not particularly great.”

The Post has reached out to representatives of Witherspoon, Wahlberg, and Foley for their comments on the matter. At the time of filming “Fear,” Witherspoon was 19 years old, while Wahlberg was 22.

Witherspoon, who went on to achieve career-defining roles in movies such as “Legally Blonde,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “Walk the Line,” described her experience on “Fear” as an early lesson in how women are treated in the entertainment industry. She emphasized that although she is not traumatized by the incident, it shaped her understanding of gender dynamics in filmmaking. It inspired her to become an advocate for change and to contribute to telling stories from a female perspective, rather than through the male gaze.

Years later, in 2016, Witherspoon founded Hello Sunshine, a production company dedicated to telling female-led stories, which resulted in successful projects like “Big Little Lies,” “The Morning Show,” and “Daisy Jones & the Six.”

In the same interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Witherspoon also discussed how her recent divorce from Jim Toth differed from her previous separation from ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. She described her first separation as a period of feeling “very out of control.” However, her current split involves gossip and speculation that she cannot control. Despite this, she remains committed to being honest, forthright, and vulnerable during this vulnerable time in her life.
