Marjorie Taylor Greene’s impeachment talk deemed a theatrical display by the White House

U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) addressed the media outside the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, on August 24, 2023, as former U.S. President Donald Trump prepared to turn himself in for processing after his indictment in Georgia.

WASHINGTON — The White House has responded to Republican calls for impeachment, describing them as “a partisan stunt,” following Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s declaration that she will not vote to fund the government without impeachment proceedings.

“I have already made up my mind that I will not vote to fund the government unless we initiate an impeachment inquiry,” stated Greene.

During a town hall meeting with her constituents and later in a tweet, Greene reaffirmed her stance, stating that she will withhold her vote on essential budget bills until President Joe Biden faces impeachment proceedings.

Failing to fund the government would result in a shutdown when the fiscal year ends on September 30, potentially leading to furloughed employees, closed agencies, and jeopardy for many essential programs.

With less than a month remaining until the deadline, the House has only passed one of the 12 budget bills required to fund the government.

In response, the White House has urged Congress to pass a short-term continuing resolution to fund the government while long-term budget negotiations continue. Even before Greene’s comments, significant divisions persisted between the parties, with Republicans seeking substantial spending cuts unlikely to pass in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Additionally, Greene has declared that she will not vote on budget measures unless the House stops “Biden’s weaponization of government,” ends coronavirus mandates, and ceases funding to Ukraine.

White House spokesperson Ian Sams strongly criticized Greene in a statement, asserting that millions of dollars have already been wasted on the baseless investigation into Biden and his family.

“One of the most influential members of the House, Marjorie Taylor Greene, has openly admitted that the House Republican impeachment is merely a partisan stunt driven by the most extreme far-right members,” said Sams.

Republicans have yet to provide any evidence of wrongdoing by Biden during his time as vice president or any benefit he may have received from his son’s involvement with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has started warning his members about the potential consequences of failing to fund the government, highlighting the impact it could have on their impeachment probe, which he previously deemed a “natural next step” in a Fox News interview.

“If we shut down, the entire government shuts down, including investigations,” McCarthy stated on Fox News Sunday.

In an interview with Breitbart News on Friday, McCarthy clarified that if the House were to initiate an impeachment inquiry into Biden, there would be a formal vote.

“If we take steps towards an impeachment inquiry, it will be through a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives, not through a declaration by an individual,” McCarthy emphasized.
