Maria Sharapova returns to New York for Grand Slam as IBM brings AI to US Open

The 2023 U.S. Open is set to introduce game-changing artificial intelligence (AI) technology, following the footsteps of other major tennis tournaments this year. The tournament will kick off on Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, with millions of fans expected to tune in through traditional methods like television, as well as through the tournament’s app and digital platforms.

This year, the U.S. Open will have a special guest in attendance, former champion Maria Sharapova. Sharapova, in collaboration with IBM, will introduce innovative technology that will enhance the experience for both fans and players. IBM’s consulting team has been working closely with the United States Tennis Association to develop a cutting-edge digital experience for tennis fans.

Connectivity between fans and athletes is vital in the world of sports, and Sharapova recognizes its importance. IBM’s data center, housed in Arthur Ashe Stadium, will gather and analyze millions of data points for the U.S. Open’s digital platforms. The tournament will also feature AI commentary, using a first-of-its-kind sports computer vision module that collects and analyzes data on players’ movements. This data is transformed into narration through a language model. Earlier this year, IBM introduced similar technology for Wimbledon, where Watsonx AI platform created audio commentary and captions for video highlights.

For this year’s U.S. Open, IBM’s Watsonx.ai will curate original content for the U.S. Open app and the official tournament website. The generative AI models will provide features like “Match Insights” and AI commentary for highlight reels, offering tennis fans a whole new way to experience the sport.

Fans who are unable to attend the U.S. Open in person often struggle to find specific matches among the hundreds played on 22 different courts. With the help of IBM’s AI technology, spoken commentary will be available for all matches played at the U.S. Open, ensuring a seamless experience for fans. The AI system has been trained to understand the language of tennis, providing meaningful business outcomes driven by an organization’s proprietary data.

Maria Sharapova, although retired, remains active in her fitness routine. She is known for her disciplined approach to stay at the top of her game. The 2023 U.S. Open will commence on August 28 and conclude on September 10.
