Maria Sharapova expresses contentment with her current state in a rare public appearance

Maria Sharapova made a triumphant return to the US Open in Flushing Meadows, but this time in her most important role yet – that of a mother. The 36-year-old Russian, who gave birth to her son, Theodore, with her fiancé Alexander Gilkes on July 1, 2022, captured attention when she appeared at the opening day on Monday in a powerful red suit. As a spectator, she couldn’t be happier. In an interview with People, Sharapova expressed her contentment with where she is in life. “I’m incredibly satisfied with the stage of life I’m in,” she said. “I value the lessons the sport has taught me and the opportunities it has given me, but now I truly enjoy observing it from the outside.”

Once ranked as the World No. 1 in tennis, Sharapova retired from the sport in February 2020 after a first-round loss to Donna Vekic at the Australian Open. Now, as a spectator, she has a newfound appreciation for watching the game unfold. “I absolutely love it,” Sharapova remarked about being a spectator at the US Open, which will run until September 10. “Having an outsider’s perspective is fascinating to me. I relish witnessing the emergence of new generations in the sport.”

In fact, the US Open is the only tennis event Sharapova has attended in person since her retirement. She considers it a truly special tournament due to the vibrant energy of the crowds. Sharapova accompanied fashion designer Gabriela Hearst to the event and shared a photo of the two together on her Instagram Story. They were spotted sitting near renowned designer Vera Wang and Anna Wintour, the longstanding editor-in-chief of Vogue. Sharapova praised her own stylish ensemble, referring to her designer attire as being “red hot” for the week.

This year at the US Open, Sharapova assumed a different role. As the captain of the SS Evian, a floating tennis court on the Hudson River, she took on the responsibility of overseeing the unique event during the men’s final on September 10. Sharapova, who announced her pregnancy on her 35th birthday in April 2022, acknowledged that motherhood has shifted her priorities. “After having a child, there are so many other crucial responsibilities to attend to,” she explained. “If I miss a workout or feel like indulging in a midday cookie, I give myself that freedom. It’s about finding a balance in those moments.” Despite juggling various business ventures, Sharapova cherishes the support she receives from her husband and family and acknowledges that each week presents new challenges.

In December 2020, Sharapova confirmed her engagement to Alexander Gilkes, a British businessman and co-founder of online auction house Paddle8.
