Country music singer-songwriters Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd are ending their marriage of five years.
Morris, who originally married Hurd in March 2018, filed for divorce on Oct. 2 in Tennessee. The split was due to “irreconcilable differences,” according to court records from Davidson County.
The filing states that Morris and Hurd were living together until the day of filing and have a 3-year-old son named Hayes. In her request, Morris asked for their prenuptial agreement to be enforced and joint custody of their son.
Morris, who gave birth to Hayes in March 2020, has been open about her struggles with postpartum depression. In an interview with TODAY’s Willie Geist, she discussed her experience and how it affected her identity as a new mother.
During that time, Morris found solace in music, with her husband supporting her through the difficult period. However, Morris has recently announced her decision to step back from country music, citing a “toxic” environment within the industry.
In an interview on The New York Times “Popcast” podcast, Morris expressed her desire to distance herself from certain factions of the music industry in Nashville. She emphasized that she still loves Nashville and its talented songwriters but no longer wants to tolerate and explain people’s negative behavior.
Morris is now focusing on her own path and has requested her team not to submit her work for country music awards shows. However, she wants to clarify that she is not turning her back on country music or her fans.
“I’m not shutting off fans of country music. That’s not my intention,” she assured. “It’s just the music industry that I have to walk away from.”
