MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed his slight embarrassment regarding the lack of support given to the country’s athletes, coaches, and trainers.
“I am always a little embarrassed when I see that we are not supporting our athletes, coaches, trainers, and all the support groups, including their families,” Marcos said during his speech in Malacaãng, where incentives were distributed to Filipino athletes who won medals at the 32nd Southeast Asia Games (SEA) and the 12th Asean Para Games.
“A lot of people have made sacrifices. These include our coaches and our parents who support you. It appears that the recognition and honor you bring to the Philippines are not proportionate to the immense service you provide to our country and our people,” Marcos added.
Marcos then pledged to double the incentives specified in the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act, which are as follows:
SEA games, individual games category:
-
- Gold medalist: P300,000
- Silver medalist: Php 150,000
- Bronze medalist: P60,000
ASEAN Para Games: P150,000
