March 2024 Trial Scheduled for Donald Trump’s Federal Election Case

The federal criminal trial of Donald Trump, accused of election interference leading up to the January 6 riots, is scheduled to commence in March 2024. This poses a logistical challenge as he campaigns for another term in the White House.

US District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington rejected Trump’s request to delay the trial until after the next presidential election. Instead, the trial will start on March 4, 2024. This date falls just before “Super Tuesday”, a crucial day for Republican voters in numerous states to choose their presidential nominee.

Judge Chutkan emphasized that Trump will need to accommodate the trial date regardless of his schedule.

Trump is currently the leading contender among a crowded field of Republicans vying for the party’s nomination in 2024. However, his pursuit of another term is complicated by four separate criminal cases that will unfold before the election.

It is no secret that Trump and his advisers aim to delay the legal proceedings until after the general election, with Trump suggesting he could potentially pardon himself of any federal criminal convictions if elected president.

Trump’s lawyers sought to postpone the federal trial in Washington, relating to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election, until April 2026. On the other hand, Special Counsel Jack Smith, appointed by US Attorney General Merrick Garland, recommended a trial start in January of the following year, just days before the Iowa caucuses.

During the court hearing in Washington, both proposed start dates were dismissed by Judge Chutkan, who stated that Trump’s work schedule should not dictate the trial timing. Trump did not appear at the hearing.

The federal case in Washington is just one of four criminal proceedings against Trump, who is now facing a total of 91 charges. He also has a case in Manhattan related to alleged falsification of business records to conceal “hush money” payments, as well as a separate federal case in Miami for mishandling classified documents. Trials for the Manhattan case are scheduled for March 2024 and for the classified documents case in May 2024.

Interestingly, Trump and 18 others were indicted this month in Fulton County, Georgia, for their attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump surrendered to authorities in Georgia and had his mugshot taken. He and his co-defendants are set to be arraigned and enter a plea of not guilty on September 6.

While Trump’s critics argue that his legal troubles may undermine his political ambitions, his allies believe that the looming criminal trials have only solidified his support among Republican grassroots, who will determine the party’s nominee in 2024.

With each indictment, Trump’s poll numbers have risen. The Trump campaign announced that they received over $7 million in donations since the release of his mugshot.
