Manager at Amazon Sentenced to 16 Years for Leading $9.4 Million Theft Ring

Kayricka Wortham, a former operations manager at an Amazon warehouse in Atlanta, has been handed a 16-year prison sentence for orchestrating a $10 million fraud scheme. Wortham, along with six other co-conspirators, defrauded the e-commerce giant out of $9.4 million, using the stolen money to indulge in a lavish lifestyle. She purchased luxury cars, including a Lamborghini and a Tesla, as well as a $1 million mansion in an Atlanta suburb. Wortham, who worked at Amazon from August 2020 to March 2022, abused her position of trust by submitting and approving forged invoices for fake vendors and redirecting the funds to her personal accounts. The Department of Justice seized the cars and home, valued at approximately $2.7 million. In addition to the prison sentence, Wortham has been ordered to pay $9.5 million in restitution to Amazon. Kayricka Wortham’s girlfriend, Brittany Hudson, who owned a business contracted by Amazon, aided Wortham in the scheme by submitting false invoices. Hudson has been indicted on conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering charges. Other individuals involved in the plot include Demetrius Hines, a loss prevention employee at Amazon, and Laquettia Blanchard, a human resources assistant. Hines and Blanchard provided Wortham with names and Social Security numbers to falsify vendor accounts. Hines acquired the stolen personal information from JaQuan Frazier. The remaining co-conspirators, Jamar L. James and Darrel J. Burgo, who allegedly sold personal information to Wortham, are also facing charges. Chief US District Judge Timothy C. Batten will sentence Hines, Blanchard, and Frazier at a later date. Wortham and Hudson, who were free on bail, attempted to open a hookah bar called Cru Lounge in Midtown Atlanta while awaiting their sentencing. However, their bonds were revoked when prosecutors discovered that they had forged court documents and falsified bank statements. The charges in that case are still pending.
