Man Trains to Accomplish Over 1,000 Burpees in Just One Hour

Burpees are often regarded as the most hated and dreaded exercise. However, that is precisely why Sam Finn has chosen to embrace them, aiming to complete 1,010 in less than one hour and break the Guinness World Record. “I wanted something that would make people think I’m insane and spark conversations,” Sam explained. To prepare for this monumental challenge, Sam trains by doing up to 1,800 burpees every week. His motivation behind this grueling feat is to raise awareness for sarcoma, an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Cedric, Sam’s older brother, tragically lost his life to sarcoma. Described as someone filled with love for life, bravery, and determination, Cedric serves as Sam’s inspiration. “When I compare it to what he had to go through, I tell myself this is easy because it actually is,” Sam explained. Cedric was diagnosed at the young age of 27 and endured orthopedic and brain surgeries along with multiple rounds of chemotherapy. Despite the hardships, Cedric maintained a positive attitude until the end, inspiring Sam to keep pushing through tough times.

Sam is not only aiming to raise awareness but also to raise funds for cancer research. He has set a goal of $80,000 for the Cedars Cancer Foundation. As sarcoma represents only one percent of all cancer diagnoses, it is often underfunded and under-researched. Sam’s efforts contribute to the important work of researchers and doctors like Dr. Robert Turcotte, an orthopedic surgeon at McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Dr. Turcotte’s team has already benefited from funds raised by Sam in the past.

In 2019, Sam broke the Guinness World Record for the most burpees in 12 hours, completing an astounding 5,234 and raising nearly $70,000. This time, the one-hour burpee record presents a new challenge as Sam describes it as a sprint that requires maintaining an extremely high speed. Nevertheless, Sam is willing to endure the undeniable difficulty because he knows the fight is worth it, just like his brother Cedric did.
