Man from Orange County found guilty of murdering girlfriend and dumping her body in Anaheim garbage bin – Orange County Register

A La Habra resident convicted for strangling his girlfriend and disposing of her body in an Anaheim trash bin while attempting to flee the country has been found guilty of murder. Amer Alhasan, now 33, was convicted on Tuesday of first-degree murder for the killing of Tiyanie Ly on October 30, 2018, following an hour and a half of jury deliberation in Orange County Superior Court.

The body of Ly was discovered in a duffel bag that had been stuffed into a trash container behind an apartment complex on Balboa Plaza in Anaheim. Detectives quickly established that Alhasan was the last person to see her alive and managed to apprehend him before he could board a flight at Los Angeles International Airport.

During the trial, Deputy District Attorney Janine Madera revealed that Alhasan murdered Ly because she refused to have an abortion. They believed she was pregnant with twin boys, and since Alhasan was dating both Ly and another woman in Jordan, he claimed he couldn’t afford to raise a child.

However, Alhasan’s defense attorney, Michael Bruggeman, argued that the death was an accident resulting from a heated argument in which Ly provoked Alhasan.

In his own testimony, Alhasan confessed to killing Ly but claimed it was accidental. He stated that she instigated a fight and admitted she wasn’t pregnant before the fatal altercation. Alhasan panicked after her death and decided to dispose of her body and flee to Jordan, where he has family ties.

Ly and Alhasan had broken up but reconciled a few days prior to her death. Ly informed Alhasan that she was pregnant, although tests conducted after her death proved otherwise.

Alhasan’s roommate testified that an emotional Alhasan informed him about Ly’s refusal to have an abortion. The roommate advised Alhasan that the decision ultimately belonged to Ly and he needed to take responsibility.

Alhasan claimed that Ly later confessed she wasn’t pregnant, but he couldn’t understand why she had falsely claimed she was. According to his testimony, he suggested taking a week-long break to sort things out, and then he took Xanax and went to sleep.

When Alhasan woke up, he found Ly in his room. An argument ensued, with Alhasan asking her to leave and Ly expressing a desire to talk. According to Alhasan, Ly suddenly grabbed his testicles tightly and refused to let go. In response, he gripped her neck until she released him. Ly lost consciousness and fell on top of Alhasan. Unable to revive her, Alhasan realized she was dead.

After his girlfriend’s death, Alhasan admitted to conducting various internet searches related to murder charges in California, evading a murder charge, and disposing of a dead body. He stated that he was in a state of panic at the time.

Regarding his engagement to a woman in Jordan, which Ly was unaware of, Alhasan minimized its significance, testifying that it simply meant their families had agreed they could communicate, not that they were going to be married.

During cross-examination, Madera pointed out that in order to strangle Ly, Alhasan would have had to restrict her airflow completely for several minutes, even after she had lost consciousness. She added that if he had stopped choking her as soon as she passed out, Ly would still be alive.

Sentencing for Alhasan is scheduled for October 6. He faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
