Exactly one year ago today (July 18, 2022), a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman in the Crenshaw area was apprehended, prompting authorities to encourage other potential victims to come forward.
The Los Angeles Police Department arrested Eric Hicks, aged 35, at around 6 p.m. on July 11. He was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted rape and held on a bail amounting to $3.3 million, confirmed the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The alleged incident, which involved sexual assault, took place on June 20 at approximately 4:30 p.m. near Somerset Drive and Coliseum Street, as reported by the LAPD.
On that fateful day, the suspect allegedly stalked the woman on foot from the Crenshaw/Expo Metro station, ultimately assaulting her by pushing her into nearby bushes and committing the act. The victim desperately called for help, catching the attention of a passing bicyclist who promptly notified the police,” stated the LAPD. “Subsequently, the suspect fled on foot heading northbound on Somerset Drive.”
Authorities promptly released a detailed description and security camera images of the suspect, appealing to the public for assistance in locating him.
Moving forward to July 10, Hicks appeared at the Criminal Courts Building following his arrest for an unrelated sexual assault that took place three days prior, according to the LAPD.
“On July 7, at 11:50 p.m., a minor victim exited the Red Line train at Union Station and was walking through Union Station,” said an LAPD statement. “While on the escalator, the suspect approached the victim from behind and physically assaulted them. Luckily, the victim was able to flag down a nearby security guard who promptly contacted the police.”
The LAPD continued, stating, “The victim performed a private arrest on the suspect, but the case was declined by the City Attorney. However, Southwest detectives intervened and took the suspect into custody for the attempted rape that occurred on June 20, 2022.”
Authorities suspect that Hicks has been targeting his victims by utilizing public transportation.
