A man entered a plea of not guilty on Monday to charges stemming from a series of robberies targeting taco vendors at six different locations in Los Angeles. The robberies took place within a two-hour time frame last week.
Stayshawn Stephens, a 26-year-old resident of Los Angeles, is facing 12 felony counts of second-degree robbery for his alleged involvement in the hold-ups. The incidents occurred last Wednesday in downtown Los Angeles, Echo Park, and east Hollywood, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
During the robberies, three individuals dressed in black clothing and carried handguns, and on one occasion, a knife. They proceeded to search the victims’ pockets, steal tip jars, and escape in a Honda Civic. This information has been provided by the District Attorney’s Office.
While an investigation is still ongoing regarding the other suspects, Stephens has been identified as one of the individuals involved in these series of robberies. He was apprehended last Thursday by detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division and has been in custody since then, according to jail records.
“The continuous acts of violence targeting street vendors will not be tolerated,” stated District Attorney George Gascón while announcing the charges. “These organized armed robberies against vulnerable individuals who are simply trying to make a living are absolutely repulsive.”
