Man Arrested for Alleged DUI in Tragic Accident Resulting in Son’s Death

The investigation is ongoing into the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy, whose father was apprehended on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) following a weekend crash in Pomona.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred around 12:05 a.m. on Saturday on the southbound Orange (57) Freeway near Temple Avenue. Ignacio Vazquez, a 32-year-old Pomona resident, sustained “major injuries” and was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital. He was subsequently arrested for DUI.

The CHP stated that a 12-year-old boy, traveling with Vazquez in a 2016 Honda Civic, tragically passed away at the hospital. The identity of the boy and his relationship to the suspect have not been released by the authorities. However, KTLA news reported that the boy was Abel Vazquez, the son of Vazquez and just a day shy of his 13th birthday.

The CHP reported that Vazquez was driving the Honda at a high speed while heading southbound on SR-57 to Temple Avenue.

“It was determined that Vazquez was driving under the influence of alcohol, and for reasons that are still under investigation, the Honda left the roadway and crashed into a dirt embankment,” said the CHP in a statement.

“Both Vazquez and his passenger sustained major injuries and were transported by Fire Personnel to Pomona Valley Hospital for medical treatment,” added the CHP.

“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the traffic collision,” the CHP informed. “Mr. Vazquez was impaired at the time of the crash and was subsequently arrested for DUI.”

On Sunday, family and friends gathered near the crash site to commemorate Abel Vazquez’s upcoming birthday with prayers, songs, and remembrance, KTLA reported.

“My sister has endured every parent’s worst nightmare, having to bury her own child,” expressed Cesar Sanchez, the victim’s uncle and godfather, in an interview with KTLA.

The Vazquez family was returning from a concert, celebrating Abel’s birthday, when the heartbreaking accident took place, according to KTLA.

“Abel insisted that his father only bought two tickets because he wanted to spend quality time with him,” shared Sanchez.

“If alcohol or any other substance did contribute to this tragic incident, we firmly believe that the perpetrator should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Sanchez added.

The family told KTLA that Abel was known for his sense of humor, love for dancing and playing baseball. His favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
